A hiccup is an unwanted and uncontrolled contraction of the diaphragm, which can be repeated several times over a minute. Contraction is followed by a sudden closure of the vocal cords, resulting in a characteristic sound.

Although the sound itself often causes laughter among the audience, hiccups can be an unpleasant and irritating phenomenon, especially when it is repeated for a long time. In most cases, hiccups stop after only a few minutes.

What can cause hiccups?
  • Over-eating;
  • Strong emotions joy, anxiety, fear or euphoria;
  • Consumption of carbonated drinks;
  • Eating dry or spicy food;
  • Change in temperature in the stomach – drinking a cold drink immediately after a hot drink;
  • Consuming alcohol in large quantities;
  • Strong laughter.
How can you help yourself?

Most often, the hiccups disappear within a few minutes. Only in rare cases is it a sign of a more serious health problem. If they don’t stop within 48 hours, seek the assistance of an expert. There are many different ways in which you can stop the usual hiccups. Some of them may seem funny to you, but it’s worth giving them a chance.


Breathe in and hold the air in you as long as possible. Take a deep breath and count to 10 before you exhale. Repeat 3-4 times.

  1. Drink cold water. Quickly drink 10 small sips of cold water, or make a gargle with cold water.
  2. Eat a teaspoon of sugar or honey.
  3. Breathe in a paper bag. If you do not have a paper bag, cover your nose and mouth with your hands and breathe some time in such a way.
  4. Stick out your tongue. Stretch out your tongue firmly to stop the cord.
  5. Gently clog your ears. Carefully clog the ear canal with your palms or fingers for a period of 20-30 seconds. Many argue that this is precisely the “remedy” for bored hiccups.
  6. Bite a piece of lemon or drink a small sip of vinegar. The sour taste helps to get rid of the hiccup.
  7. Lift your knees towards the chest and hug them.
